As a college student studying Vocal Performance, I often think back to why I decided to pursue a career in music. When I boil it down, it all comes back to one thing: community.
Music has the power―unlike anything else―to bring people together. Why, you ask? Well, for many of us, music has played an integral part of our lives since the moment we were born. As children, lullabies and nursery rhymes put us to sleep. Since then, music has (most likely) been a part of many important occasions across our lives. Whether it be birthdays, graduations, weddings, or funerals, music has proven to be a powerful means by which to celebrate, rejoice, love, or even mourn.
There is something about music―singing in particular―that seems to bring us closer to each other. For example, any time I attend a concert or live performance, I feel as though I’m part of something bigger than myself. Listening to hundreds of voices unite makes me feel as though I have a personal bond with every single person in the venue, despite not really knowing any of them.
Even when I’m by myself in the car―embarrassingly belting out my favorite songs―I never truly feel alone. Through lyrics, rhythms, and melodies, I feel deeply connected to the artists and the powerful messages they express through their music.
There are endless reasons to love music, but I am most amazed by its power to unite us all. I encourage us all to reflect on the different ways music has created unity in our lives and share the power of music with one another.
